◎ CHAPTER 10 ◎

THE CONTESTS AGAINST THE THREE DEMONS

Unwilling to accept defeat, Deer-power Fairy said, "Let them compete with us another way. They are monks. Let us compete to see who can sit in the lotus position and meditate longer."

Sun Wukong said, "Well, I am not too good with that, but Master, this is right up your alley. Why don't you accept the challenge?"

Sanzang said, "I can sit for hours without any problem. I'm willing to volunteer for this."

Tiger-power Fairy then set up a platform consisting of one hundred tables piled on top of one another, going up three hundred feet. He then went up by riding cloud, and sat there in lotus position.

Sanzang could not fly, but Sun Wukong held him and raised him to his platform. A few hours into the contest, Tiger-power Fairy released a flea, which flew to Sanzang and bit his neck. Sanzang felt the itch, but could not scratch, as the rules did not allow any movement of arms and other limbs.

Sun Wukong saw the Master's agonized face and knew something was wrong. He flew to Sanzang without being seen, found the flea, crushed it, and scratched the Master's itchy spots. Sanzang felt perfectly composed once more, and ready to go on for many more hours.

Knowing this to be the Tiger-power Fairy's dirty trick, Sun Wukong decided to repay him. He flew over to Tiger-power Fairy, turned into a huge centipede, crawled to his face, and bit him hard on the nose.

Tiger-power Fairy could not maintain his composure, and he fell to the ground. Sun Wukong declared victory and asked, "Will you now stamp our documents and let us go?"

Tiger-power Fairy said, "Not so fast. There are other ways to compete. We can guess the contents of a box without seeing it. Can you do the same?"

Tiger-power Fairy asked the king to put something into the box, and the king placed a new robe inside the box. Sun Wukong changed into a termite and ate his way into the box, then tore up the robe and put dirt on it. He then flew to Sanzang's ear and told him to guess the contents to be a dirty rag.

Deer-power Fairy said, "Inside the box is a new robe."

Sanzang waited for his turn and said, "It is a dirty rag."

The king said to Sanzang, "You lost. I myself placed a new robe inside the box."

Sun Wukong said, "Open it up and see."

The king opened the box, and they found a dirty rag. Everyone was dumbfounded, but Deer-power Fairy said, "Try another time."

The King put a peach inside, and Sun Wukong went into the box and ate up the peach, leaving only the stone behind. He flew over to Sanzang and said, "It is the seed of a peach."

Bajie laughed and commented, "You're certainly an expert at eating a peach!"

When the box was presented, Deer-power Fairy said, "It's a peach."

Sanzang said, "No, it's just a seed."

The king was dubious, and Sun Wukong urged him, "Open it and see.
